A REAL AFRICA EXPERIENCE

The Matunkha Centre (www.matunkha.nl), situated close to Rumphi in Northern Malawi, is a local organisation for education, community health and rural development. As with most local organisations, funds need to be raised within and without Malawi.

To make the Matunkha Cente more self-sustainable, an Income Generating Activities department has been established. One of these activities is the Matunkha Safaris: a Lodge at the Centre and activities in and around the area where Matunkha works.

The Lodge has self-contained roundavels, sharing bedrooms, a campsite and a restaurant with local and international dishes.
The Safari activities are based on mdules with which you can compose your own real Africa holiday.

Matunkha: eco friendly, local focus and responsible tourism.

The Lodge as well as the Safari Actvities are both developed with the local community in mind:

1. Most employees are coming from around Matunkha. They all have been trained by us. A lot of them do care for their parents and / orphans. Some of our employees have finished their secondary school thanks to the sponsorship by Matunkha.
2. Many ingredients for the restaurant are bought locally. In this way we boost the local economy and encourage people to do business by growing vegetables or raising chickens, a.o.
3. The buildings are made with locally sourced materials such as timber, rocks and grass for the thatching. Matunkha has a blockmaking machine so that we do not haveto buy burnt bricks. In this way we help to decrease the deforestation.
4. Local carpenters, welders and bricklayers have constructed the restaurant, guesthouses and the infra-structure.
5.The landscape at Matunkha shows beautiful indigenous trees that have grown back after the cutting and burnng was prohibited. The area of Matunkha has been declared by all surrounding chief a 'Community Conservation Area'.
6. Several safari activities are developed by the local community. Each community has formed a committee which organizes the activity and receives the income. Matunkha regularly checks the quality and safety and keeps in contact with the committees.
7. Our tour guides are from the area. They have been trained and know their job. Even employees of the Matunkha Centre itself are trained and can travel with guests.
